Making my own outdoor cage: Thick wiring

by Jade Leanne
(England)

I am building a large ferret cage (tall - so i can fit into the pen cage and clean it etc.) I have heard that ferrets don't like sawdust, and i was wondering whether a wooden base to hold the cage together would affect the ferrets?

However, another question that i can't seem to find an answer to is:

What sort of wiring should i use? I am building a tall, quite large house/pen and i have heard that ferrets have sharp teeth and are good at escaping, does anybody have any suggested materials to use for the pen, or any suggested, thick, safe wiring to surround the outside of my cage with so that they won't nibble through it?

Thank you :)

credo che ai furetti sarebbe meglio fare una gabbia lunga piuttosto che alta amano correre e non tenteranno di fuggire

Thick is better!
by: Charlie From How-To-Hunt-Rabbit.com

Hi Jade thanks for the comment.

Sawdust is dangerous to ferrets as it can affect their breathing and do some real damage. Its fine to make a pen from wood but be sure not to leave the dust!

People told you the truth about ferrets, they WILL find a way of getting out if you let them. Make sure you build a solid base with no gaps. Wood is fine but its even better if you bury it under earth on the inside and out. This will give the cage a softer floor and make digging too hard.

When it comes to which wire to use, its a case of thicker is better. When we first build our pen we used a single sheet of chicken wire. It lasted 4 days! Iv found the best way to put in your wire is to have a layer of thinner chicken wire (the sort you normally see, then a layer of 0.8mm thick wire (the type that comes with a square patten) followed by another layer of chicken wire.

I know it sounds like a lot of hard work, but you'll only ever have to build it this way once.
Best of luck, I'd love to see some photos when your done.

Charlie
